Volunteering policy

Last reviewed on 26 July 2018

Here at the Co-op we want to encourage all of our colleagues to play an active role in their communities.

We want to support colleagues to volunteer, so talk to your manager about what types of activities you could get involved in.

Crucial bits

There are lots of ways to get involved, whether that’s through our Volunteering Programme or in your own time.

If you are taking part in volunteering need to take some time off work to do this, we offer two days paid leave per year pro-rata to help. You’ll need to agree this time with your manager, but they’ll always try to say yes unless it would cause problems for the business. If you need more time than this, then talk to your manager about taking unpaid leave or holidays.

Things to think about

You may already be volunteering in your local community. If you are, contact the Volunteering Programme to find out if you can register for Self-Arranged Volunteering with them. This helps you get support for activities that you’ve already arranged and means that you can access the paid time off.

We also value volunteering done in your own time, so tell your manager about what you are involved in and if there is any support you need.

We want your pay to be right, so this should be recorded as either Paid or Unpaid Volunteering, as agreed with your manager. This also helps us to report on the great work our colleagues are doing in our communities.

If you need further support

If you would like information about the Volunteering Programme, take a look at the volunteer page on this site.

If you have any other questions about volunteering, please speak to your manager. If managers need advice they should contact ER Services.
